The Tata Group has announced plans to expand its presence in Assam, with Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran revealing intentions to establish a large electronics manufacturing facility and collaborate on green energy initiatives.
The announcement builds on the group's existing investments in the state, notably the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor unit in Jagiroad.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 'Advantage Assam Business Summit' in Guwahati on Tuesday, Chandrasekaran said, "The Tata group has a long and significant association with Assam...Taking forward the group's commitment towards the state, it will invest in another large electronics manufacturing unit soon."
Last year, Tata Electronics began the construction of its Rs 27,000-crore chip assembly plant at Jagiroad in Morigaon district of Assam, which is expected to become operational next year and create 27,000 jobs initially.
The plant will produce 4.83 crore chips per day, using indigenously developed technologies. The chips manufactured at the Tata plant will be used in vehicles, including electric vehicles, and practically every large company will be using these chips.
The project was approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024.
