Sterlite to Transfer Retail Internet Business

Optical fibre maker Sterlite Technologies is transferring its retail internet business to Spectranet but will continue with its core business of laying cables for telecom services.

New Delhi: Optical fibre maker Sterlite Technologies is transferring its retail internet business to Spectranet but will continue with its core business of laying cables for telecom services.

"We were offering internet services to about 150 customers as proof of concept which we are now transferring to Spectranet. They will get uninterrupted services from Spectranet now," Sterlite CEO Anand Agarwal told PTI.

Sterlite did not disclose details of agreement with internet service provider Spectranet. No reply was received on query sent to Spectranet in this regard.

In November, the Pune-based company had connected about 1.8 lakh homes with optical fibres cable (OFC) out of which 40,000 were getting high speed broadband through telecom operators like Airtel and Tata Teleservices.

The company has presence in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Sterlite is aiming to expand its presence to 10 cities and connect 10 lakh homes with high speed broadband by 2017.

The company will focus on facilitating broadband connections with download speed of up to 100 megabit per second and roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and Chandigarh by the end of next year, it said.

"Our expansion plans will continue as they are. There is no change in them," Mr Agarwal added.
