Sensex turned choppy in the late noon deals on Thursday as selling pressure in the capital goods and banking stocks cooled down.
The 50-share Nifty was trading above important psychological level of 8,900 supported by renewed buying in HDFC Bank, ITC and HDFC.
Capital goods and banking stocks which were facing the heavy selling pressure during the noon trades saw the pace of selling getting slower.
The pharma stocks continued to see buying in late noon trades. The BSE healthcare index was the top sectoral gainer, up nearly 2 per cent.
The broader markets were outperforming the benchmark indices with BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices advancing 0.5 and 0.3 per cent each respectively.
From the Nifty basket, HUL was the top gainer. The stock advanced 3 per cent to Rs 944. Sun Pharma, Lupin, HCL Technologies, Wipro and Mahindra & Mahindra were also trading higher by over 1 per cent each.
At 2:20 PM, the Sensex was down 51 points at 29,329 and Nifty was at 8,903, down 19 points.
