PVR Inox has said it plans to challenge a Rs 1.2-lakh fine imposed on the company by a district consumer court in Bengaluru.

"We are currently reviewing the order in detail and firmly believe that we have a strong case," the company said in a press release.

This pertains to a complaint filed by a viewer, who claimed PVR Inox continued to show advertisements and trailers for 30 minutes beyond the stipulated screening time of the movie. Due to this delay, the complainant said that he could not return back to work on time.

Apart from the fine, the consumer forum had also ordered PVR Inox to pay Rs 20,000 to the complainant for causing him mental agony and inconvenience and also Rs 8,000 towards the expenses that he bore to file the complaint. The amount is to be paid within 30 days to consumer welfare fund, the order said.

The consumer forum also issued a set of directions to the cinema chain, stating that actual movie time should be mentioned on cinema tickets and that PVR must stop engaging in unfair trade practices.

The company said that it has not engaged in any unfair trade practices and has always adhered to legal and regulatory requirements.

PVR Inox added it remains committed to acting in the best interests of its customers and ensuring transparency and compliance will continue to be its priority.

The matter is dated Dec. 26, 2023 and the viewer had purchased three tickets for the movie Sam Bahadur.
