On field victories are translating on the balance sheet of Indian Premier League teams. After their win in IPL 2024, Shah Rukh Khan co-owned Kolkata Knight Riders saw a 19.3% growth in its valuation at $216.0 million. The franchise has the third highest valuation among IPL teams now.
The Chennai Super Kings retained their crown as the most valued IPL franchise, with a brand value of $231.0 million, up 9% from previous year, as per the latest IPL Brand Valuation Study by Houlihan Lokey.
Indian Premier League's franchise valuations have surged exponentially alongside an unprecedented advertising bonanza, propelling the league's overall business value to $16.4 billion.
Fueling this surge in franchise valuations is the IPL's status as an advertising paradise, with each T20 match offering a plethora of strategically placed 80 to 100 ad slots.
Like the annual spectacle of the NFL's Super Bowl, the IPL has become the epicenter of sports advertising in India, leveraging its widespread appeal to launch new TV commercials across various sectors. This advertising bonanza has not only boosted revenues for IPL franchises, but also contributed significantly to the league's overall business value, the report said.
“The IPL has solidified its status as a premier sports league on the global stage, showcasing an exceptional blend of sportsmanship, entertainment, and commercial success,” said Harsh Talikoti, senior vice president, corporate valuation advisory services at Houlihan Lokey.
“The league’s growth is not just in numbers, but also in its innovative approach to engaging fans and leveraging digital platforms. This year’s increase in value underscores the IPL’s strategic initiatives and its robust fan base," he added.
IPL's overall business value rose 6.5% from the previous year to $16.4 billion, according to Houlihan Lokey's report.
Notably, the Tata Group has secured the title sponsorship for the IPL for the next five years, from 2024 to 2028, for approximately $300 million. This deal represents a 50% increase from the previous agreement.
