India achieved its highest-ever renewable energy capacity addition of 25 gigawatts in fiscal 2025, marking a 35% increase compared to the previous fiscal year, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced. In fiscal 2024, the country added 18.57 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this milestone in a post on X, calling it "a great development, illustrating the commitment of our people towards sustainability." As of Feb. 28, 2025, India's total non-fossil fuel-based capacity stood at 214.677 GW, according to official data.
Regarding the India-US bilateral trade agreement, Joshi stated that discussions are ongoing, with feedback provided to the relevant departments. On the issue of unsigned power purchase agreements, the minister noted that the Centre is taking steps to address the matter. Industry sources estimate that 40-50 GW of renewable energy capacity currently lacks signed PPAs.
Joshi emphasised the country's progress in renewable energy, particularly in solar power, which grew from 15 GW to nearly 21 GW in fiscal 2025, reflecting a 38% increase. He also noted that India crossed the 100 GW solar capacity milestone this year under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.
The government is taking significant measures to decarbonise the transportation sector and domestic households by mandating the blending of bio-CNG with compressed natural gas for transportation and piped natural gas for households. The blending obligation begins at 1% on April 1, 2025, with a target to increase it to 5% by fiscal 2029.
Additionally, the country's solar module manufacturing capacity nearly doubled from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March 2025, while cell manufacturing capacity tripled, rising from 9 GW to 25 GW during the same period.
In another first for the country, the first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility of around 2 GW commenced production in fiscal 2024-25.
Joshi said projects awarded under the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules have made investments of around Rs 41,000 crore and created direct employment for around 11,650 persons, as of February 2025.
In the very first year since the launch of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, there has been remarkable progress, with more than 11.01 lakh households benefitting till March 31, and Rs 5,437.20 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance to 6.98 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme.
