US fast food giant McDonald's has started 2026 with a major strategy shift, aiming to leverage technology and customer loyalty while also adapting to changing consumer habits.

The plan includes new restaurant openings, menu changes, pricing updates and stronger digital tools, according to Mashed. The company aims to open more than 8,000 new restaurants worldwide by the end of 2026. This is part of McDonald's broader target to reach 50,000 McDonald's locations globally by 2027.

Revamp of Drive Thru, Updated Menu

To boost efficiency, the company plans to revamp around 27,000 drive-thru locations. Many will shift to multi-lane formats to reduce wait times and handle larger orders faster, according to the report. Growth will target high-traffic and emerging markets, while existing McDonald's locations will be upgraded to meet new operating standards.

Beginning in 2026, franchisees will also follow more standardised pricing rules. While menu prices will still vary by region, operators will have less freedom to make individual changes. Pricing will rely on location data, third-party tools and expert consultants to ensure more consistent value, Mashed report added.

McDonald's will test new drink options through its CosMc's concept, expanding to more than 500 locations. The menu may include speciality cold brews, slushies and flavoured beverages. The chain is also growing its chicken lineup with new wraps and improved sandwiches. Burger quality is being upgraded through the Better Burger Initiative. This is expected to focus on better preparation, fresher ingredients and stricter food-handling standards, according to the report.

AI In Operations

McDonald's is also speeding up its move toward card and tap-to-pay systems as cash payments will be rounded up or down, the report added. Additionally, the chain is expanding its McDonald's Rewards, offering more personalised deals, easier mobile ordering and new ways to earn points.

Like all other major sectors, the fast food chain is also going to integrate artificial intelligence in its operations to improve drive-thru ordering, reduce mistakes and focus on improving overall service speed and accuracy.
