(Bloomberg) -- Almost half of British adults favor new homes being built in their area, even if a majority supports restrictions in green-belt areas, according to a survey run by pollster ComRes for the conservative Centre for Policy Studies.
A majority of Britons polled agreed that local property prices are too high, and 48 percent said they would support more homes being built, the survey showed. However, 42 percent said they disagree with a potential loosening in rules protecting green areas around urban centers. ComRes conducted an online poll of 2,046 adults in the U.K. in late September.
The research comes as officials within Prime Minister Theresa May's government push to lift some green-belt restrictions to speed up home building, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph, which didn't say how it got the information. U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond last November said the government hopes to see the construction of 300,000 homes a year.
