National carrier Air India has restricted the weight of hand luggage carried by passengers from the UAE. Free hand baggage for Air India is 8 kg. Any hand baggage including duty free shopping weighing above 8 kg will be charged, the Air India said.
"With effect from July 1, 2015, Air India has decided to implement weighing of hand baggage at boarding gates across all airports in the UAE," Air India said.
Air India also laid out the specifications of the cabin luggage. The hand baggage (carry-on bag) should not exceed the dimensions of 55 cm (22 inch), 40 cm (16 inch) and 20 cm (8 inch), it said.
Air India has however permitted passengers to carry a piece of personal item like laptop, camera, and lady's handbag.
