In a political shake-up ahead of the New York mayoral race, 33-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani clinched the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, June 24, defeating veteran politician Andrew Cuomo. He also made history as the first Indian-origin Muslim to enter the city’s mayoral contest.

His primary victory effectively ended Cuomo’s hopes of a political revival, four years after the former governor stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations. Mamdani’s triumph signals a shift in the city’s political scenario — one driven by younger, more progressive voices who see his campaign as a bold departure from the Democratic mainstream.

Who Is Zohran Mamdani?

Born in Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven. His roots are deeply global — his mother is acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, known for her films like Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a noted Ugandan academic. Today, Mamdani represents Assembly District 36 in Queens, currently serving his third term in the New York State Assembly. He is also the first South Asian man and the first Ugandan to serve in the Assembly, and only the third Muslim lawmaker to hold the coveted position.

Mamdani is married to Syrian-born artist Rama Dawaji.

Mamdani’s rise was far from predictable. He started his mayoral campaign as a relatively unknown figure, but quickly gained traction among progressive New Yorkers — especially young voters. His presence on platforms like TikTok and a campaign video delivered entirely in Urdu, peppered with Bollywood film clips, added a personal and cultural dimension that resonated widely.

His policy platform includes free public buses, universal childcare, rent freezes on subsidised housing and publicly operated grocery stores. These measures, he says, should be funded by higher taxes on the wealthy.

Despite criticism from party insiders and his vocal support for Palestine, which distances him from mainstream Democratic leadership, Mamdani's defiant stance has helped him build a fervent base.

Mamdani has drawn endorsements from heavyweight progressives such as US Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. These alliances have reinforced his image as a new-age leader ready to challenge the status quo.

He wrote in a post on X, “In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”

With the general elections scheduled for November, Mamdani heads into the next phase of the race with an advantage in a heavily Democratic city. But the contest is far from straightforward. He is expected to face off against current mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Cuomo, despite his primary loss, may also mount an independent bid, according to reports.
