Israel and the United States on Saturday launched a "preventative attack" on Iran as explosions hit Tehran after weeks of escalating tensions between the two Middle East powers. The two archfoes engaged in a 12-day war in June last year, killing hundreds.

The Israel Defence Forces said sirens were sounded all throughout the country, with an advance instruction alert directly to cellular devices to stay within proximity to protected spaces. Tel Aviv has announced a state of emergency.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was not in Tehran during Israeli airstrikes, as per Reuters. Last year, senior military and nuclear officials were killed by US and Israeli strikes.

Airspaces of both countries have been shut amid worries over a broader exchange of missiles and drones.

Israel News Live Updates: Netanyahu's Statement On Operation 'Roar Of The Lion'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Statement:

"My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, just an hour ago Israel and the USA launched an operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terror regime in Iran. I thank our great friend President Donald Trump for his historic leadership. For 47 years, the Ayatollah regime has been shouting 'Death to Israel,' 'Death to America.' It has spilled our blood, murdered many Americans, and massacred its own people.

This murderous terror regime must not be armed with nuclear weapons that would allow it to threaten all humanity. Our joint action will create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their fate into their own hands.

The time has come for all parts of the Iranian people - Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Balochs, and Ahwazis - to cast off the yoke of tyranny and bring about a free and peace-loving Iran. I call on you, citizens of Israel, to heed the Home Front Command's instructions. In the coming days, during Operation 'Roar of the Lion,' we will all be required to show endurance and strength of spirit.

Together we will stand, together we will fight, and together we will ensure the eternity of Israel."

The remarks came amid ongoing talks between US and Iranian officials in Geneva, which mediators said would continue next week after no breakthrough was achieved. At the same time, Washington has significantly increased its military presence around Iran, one of the largest regional deployments in over two decades, comparable to levels seen before the Iraq War in 2003. The two countries resumed indirect talks on Tehran's nuclear programme in Oman earlier this month.

"We haven't made a final decision (on Iran). We're not exactly happy with the way they're negotiating. They cannot have nuclear weapons," Trump said.
