'Ramayan' Could Rewrite Box Office Records, Says Karan Taurani

The upcoming film Ramayan has the potential to deliver record-breaking box office collections and further accelerate the recovery in India's theatrical exhibition industry, according to Karan Taurani, EVP at Elara Capital. Taurani said improving occupancy rates across cinemas are expected to support 18-20% growth for multiplex operators, while franchise-led films have continued to outperform in recent years. He also noted that the impact of local body tax on theatres is likely to be limited, given that the levy is imposed on a per-show ticket basis and is already prevalent in several southern states.
