Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that Altai, an endangered Amur tiger involved in a fatal incident, will not be euthanised after a man entered its enclosure and died from his injuries. The park said the tiger was safe, healthy and uninjured following the incident.

The tragedy occurred at the wildlife park near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. According to reports, the man entered the restricted tiger enclosure, reportedly climbing down from an elevated visitor walkway.

He sustained severe injuries after the encounter, and emergency services were called to the scene. Despite efforts by emergency responders and park staff, he was pronounced dead at the site.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the tiger remained inside its enclosure and had not suffered any injuries. The victim's identity has not been publicly disclosed in the reports. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including how the man gained access to the restricted area.

The park's decision not to euthanise Altai has drawn attention to the handling of fatal incidents involving captive wild animals. Officials confirmed that the animal would not be put down following the encounter. Animal welfare perspectives have also highlighted that tigers are wild predators whose natural instincts may come into play when a person enters their territory.

Altai is an endangered Amur tiger, also known as a Siberian tiger, and arrived at Yorkshire Wildlife Park from Norway in March 2025. The animal lives at the park's Land of the Tigers reserve, which houses these large predators in a managed environment designed to provide suitable habitats.

Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park temporarily closed its operations to support employees affected by the tragedy. The management expressed condolences to the victim's family and acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on staff members who witnessed or responded to the emergency.

The park is also cooperating with South Yorkshire Police and other relevant authorities as investigations continue. Police have urged members of the public not to circulate videos of the attack, stressing the need to respect those affected by the death.

Investigators are expected to examine how the visitor entered the enclosure and whether any safety procedures or access controls require further review. No conclusions about responsibility have been established publicly.
