Apple reportedly developed and internally tested a stylus for its first foldable iPhone, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter. The company was said to have come close to considering the accessory as a standalone product before deciding against launching it, at least for now.

A Shorter Pencil For The Foldable iPhone

Instead of adapting an existing Apple Pencil, Apple reportedly developed a shorter version designed for the more compact form factor of its foldable iPhone.

The stylus was designed to attach magnetically to the side of the device, where it could remain secured and draw power, similar to how Apple Pencil models attach to compatible iPads.

Why Apple May Not Launch It

The side-mounted design reportedly created usability concerns. A stylus attached to the edge of the foldable iPhone could interfere with opening the device, potentially making it inconvenient for users to keep attached during regular use.

Another concern relates to the durability of foldable displays. Unlike the glass used on conventional smartphones, foldable screens use softer materials that could be more vulnerable to marks or damage from a stylus.

This could make stylus support a difficult proposition for Apple's foldable iPhone, particularly if the company wants to protect the durability of what is expected to be one of its most expensive smartphones.
