'Slim Phone Summerslam': Galaxy S25 Edge Teased At Samsung Galaxy Unpacked; Apple Faces Tough Times
The Samsung S25 Edge resurfaces the Edge branding, which Samsung used when it introduced phones with curved edges a few years ago. And it just may spell tough times for the rumored Apple "iPhone Air".
Samsung unveiled the all-new Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and Galaxy S25 Ultra models—additions to its Galaxy smartphone family—on Jan. 22 at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025. Boasting more powerful AI features and touting wide-ranging agentic AI capabilities, the new lineup promises smartphone users a much more intuitive, personalised and intelligent experience.
However, Samsung also unpacked a big surprise for smartphone lovers around the world and it happened just about at the “closing edge” of the event, and no, it wasn’t about the Galaxy S25 Slim.
Instead, welcome the Galaxy S25 Edge!

The Galaxy S25 Edge was briefly teased on stage at the Galaxy Unpacked, but it was enough to grab the eyeballs as it pointed to a smartphone future that is more slim than ever yet packed with features, more stylish but smart, and more minimalist yet powerful.
TM Roh, president of Samsung’s Mobile Devices Business, told Bloomberg, “The Edge will use some of the same technologies as the new Ultra model, but fit them inside a slimmed-down design. Customers want the ‘best performance, the best camera features, the best AI, but at the same time they want an even more attractive form factor that stands out among the pack.’
The S25 Edge also resurfaces the Edge branding, which Samsung used when it initially introduced phones with curved edges a few years back.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Thinnest Ever?
Even though Samsung didn't disclose how thin the device is, it looked really sleek during the event. With a focus on its incredibly thin design, and with a rumoured thickness of only 6.4mm, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could be one of the thinnest smartphones on the market. The S25 Edge is actually so thin that it has two back cameras instead of three, as found in other Galaxy devices.
Yet, Samsung says that it does not detract in any way from its performance.
“We’ve been trying to combine all the advantages of the S25 Ultra in a slimmer form factor,” Roh told Bloomberg.
Wake-Up Call For Apple
The preview of the Galaxy S25 Edge comes as a wake-up call for Apple, which is also anticipated to introduce a slimmer version in its iPhone series in 2025. But Samsung looks to be a step ahead, and the S25 Edge tease only builds up to the upcoming “slim phone summerslam” later this year.
While Apple usually releases its new flagship phones in September, the Galaxy S25 Edge might launch in the first half of 2025, “beating Apple Inc. to a promising new category,” as aptly put by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Will Apple come up with the rumoured "iPhone Air" that’s even thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge? Only time will tell!
