Suryakumar Yadav's team are on a quest to become the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and also the first host nation to lift the trophy on home soil. They look set to buck both those trends, emerging on the winning side of a tense high-scoring semifinal against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on March 6.
The Men in Blue will now take on New Zealand who secured their spot in the Final after an emphatic victory over South Africa.
India and England met in the semifinal stage of the T20 World Cup for a third consecutive edition. On both previous occasions, the winner of this tie has gone on to lift the trophy. England beat India in Adelaide back in 2022 en route to winning the title, while India returned the favour at Guyana during their run to the trophy in the last edition. The host nation will hope history repeats itself at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad in the World Cup final on March 8.
After being invited to bat first, Sanju Samson put India in the driver's seat with a blisterring 89 off 42 balls, firing them to a dominant total of 253/7, the highest in a T20 World Cup semifinal.
In response, 22-year-old Jacob Bethell scored a brilliant century (105 off 48 balls) but ultimately fell short as the size of the total proved too steep a hill to scale for the Three Lions.

Suryakumar Yadav | India captain: It’s an unbelievable feeling. Obviously, playing in India, leading such a wonderful side, and with the World Cup happening here, going to Ahmedabad to play that final. I think it’s a special feeling for all the boys. I think he knew what he wanted to do as soon as he went in to bat (on Sanju Samson). Even when a wicket fell, he knew the wicket was good, so he kept pressing the pedal. The way he batted was exactly what the team required. It was due after all the hard work he’s been putting in over the last year. It was a special knock today. (on the England run-chase) Oh my God! I just told Harry Brook, “How much more do we need to score against you guys?” But honestly, it was a good wicket. The way they batted, I don’t want to take credit away from them. They were always in the game and always in the chase. But the way Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and the other bowlers pulled the game back was unbelievable. We all know what he’s capable of and what he’s done for India over the years (on Jasprit Bumrah). He did the same thing again today, raised his hand and showed character to pull the game away from them. It was a special bowling performance. I think we need to give some credit to our fielding coach Dilip T as well (on India’s superb catching). The way he’s been working with the boys in practice sessions, making them fun and competitive - the boys have responded really well. Even after their personal skill sessions, they put in extra work for the team, and that’s showing on the field. In this team, everything is settled till number three (on the left-right batting and the promotion of Shivam Dube), so we didn’t want to change anything. But when we saw Rashid bowling from one end, Dube was a perfect match-up. Even if I had scored a 50 or 100 in the last game, if the team needed that change today, it was the right call. Very nervous! If someone had checked my heart rate, it would have easily been 160–175. But that’s part of the game (if he was nervous during the chase). It was a wonderful semi-final, and now we’re very happy to go into the final. (on the crowd) The moment we came in for warm-ups, the stadium was already 75–80% full. That shows how badly they wanted India to do well today. Even though we batted first, they were really happy with the way we played. Hopefully, we gave them a great show going into the final. (Thoughts on the final) There will definitely be pressure and nerves, especially playing in India and going for the title. But the boys and the whole support staff are excited as well.
Harry Brook | England captain: We just thought there might be a little bit of hold early on with the pitch being fresh, and we expected a bit more spin in the first innings. But it didn’t quite turn out that way. Obviously, they played extremely well (on the Indian batting). All of our lads should be really proud of the way we played tonight and throughout this competition. Absolutely. I’ll hold my hands up and say that I made a big mistake there, dropping Samson. As the old saying goes, catches win matches, and unfortunately things just didn’t go our way in the field tonight. At the end of the day, it cost us. Just a bit of misexecution here and there (on the bowling). We probably didn’t execute as well as we could have. But the Indian batters are some of the best in the world, and if you misexecute against them, the ball goes out of the park. So yeah, we probably didn’t execute as well as we could have, but like I say, we gave it a red-hot crack and unfortunately ended up on the wrong side of the result. He was absolutely unbelievable (on Jacob Bethell). I think he’s going to earn some serious money in his career and have a fantastic career with England. He showed the world how good he is tonight. Unfortunately we were on the wrong side, but that innings is a huge positive to take away from this competition. Seeing him go out there and take the game on from ball one, showing everyone what he can do, it was special. I think we had a good tournament, to be honest. Like I said earlier, we should be extremely proud of the way we played. I mentioned the other day that we’re never out of games, and that was proven again tonight. Chasing 250, other teams might have folded or crumbled away, but we stuck at it the whole
Sanju Samson | Player of the Match: Feels really great. To be honest, I kind of knew that I got some form going from the last game, so I thought I need to continue. I think it's not easy you find form at the crucial games for your country, so I thought big game, I need to make the most out of how I'm batting. So I gave myself an extra time. I calculated my innings a bit. I prepared really well and I think things came off nicely. Got a bit lucky to start off and then, yeah, I think I just wanted to carry on. I think knowing, playing in Wankhede, we know that no score is stoppable here, so I just wanted to get as much as possible runs as possible. Even 250 looked like chaseable here and England played really well. I think all credit goes to how they batted and we really had a great semifinal. We need to assess the conditions. We have played a lot of matches here at the Wankhede. Very happy how the team turned up today. All credit to Jasprit Bumrah. It's an unbelievable feeling to play here at the Wankhede. You can't actually score a hundred, it comes in the process. You just have to keep going hard. Very happy to contribute.

England need 39 from 12 balls to win.
England 215/5 after 18 overs.

Bethell shapes up to lap but Arshdeep pitches it wide outside off again forcing him to bunt it to short third for a single. The 3rd ball is a sharp yorker that Curran squeezes past point for 2 runs. Arshdeep bangs the next ball short and Curran mistimes the pull for a single.
Arshdeep sends down a poor full toss on the 5th delivery and is punished as Bethell launches it over long-off for SIX. Bethell then reaches out and slices the last ball past short third for a FOUR to end the over. 16 runs come off the over.
England need 45 from 18 balls to win.
England 209/5 after 17 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah comes in for his third over. He starts well with just singles coming off the first two balls. The 3rd delivery is a low full toss and Curran flicks it past square leg for FOUR.
Bumrah responds with a slower dipping yorker that Curran awkwardly bunts back to the bowler. Bumrah gives away just singles off the last two as 8 runs come off the over.
England need 61 from 24 balls to win.
England 193/5 after 16 overs.

It's a strong comeback from Rashid after getting hit on the 1st delivery. Just 6 runs come off the over.
India 73/1 after 7 overs.
Sam Curran comes into the attack for the final over of the powerplay. He starts off well with a full delivery that beats the edge as Samson looks to drive. Samson responds by lifting the 2nd ball over mid-on for a one-bounce FOUR. He then makes room and guides the next delivery past point for back-to-back FOURs.
Samson cuts the next ball for a single. Curran bangs the next ball short but it's too high and called a wide. He restricts the batters to singles off the last two balls as 12 runs come off the over.
India 67/1 after 6 overs.
Change in bowling for the Three Lions as Jamie Overton comes in to replace Archer. He starts off with a couple of singles.
The 3rd delivery is a bit too full down leg and Kishan flicks it brilliantly for FOUR. Overton responds with a wide slower delivery but Kishan reaches out to thump it past cover for back-to-back FOURs.
Overton responds well with two dots to close out the over. 10 runs come off the over.
India 55/1 after 5 overs.
Jacks offers width on the 2nd delivery and Samson cuts it past the man at point for FOUR. Kishan gets low on the 4th delivery and he grabs his first FOUR with a well-executed sweep.
It's a good over for India with 11 runs coming off it. Two more overs of the powerplay to go.
India 45/1 after 4 overs.
Samson picks up where he left off from as he pulls the 1st delivery from Archer over midwicket for FOUR.
DROPPED! England should've had the wicket of the danger-man Samson but it's their captain who puts down a sitter. Samson drives it uppishly straight to mid-on and Brook gets both hands behind the ball but sees it pop out of his palms. That could prove to be a very expensive mistake by the England skipper.
Samson celebrates by launching the 4th delivery high into the stands at Wankhede for SIX. Archer looks to end with a wide yorker but Samson eases it through the gap past short third and backward point for FOUR.
14 runs come off the over.
India 34/1 after 3 overs.
Will Jacks enters the attack and is greeted by a fierce slice from Abhishek who sends it racing for FOUR. Jacks responds well with 3 dots in a row but Abhishek skips out on the 5th delivery and lifts it over mid-off for a one-bounce FOUR.
CAUGHT! It's one shot too many for Abhishek as he skips down the track again and looks to go big over midwicket but doesn't get enough on it as the fielder takes an easy catch. Once again India's openers can't stitch together a sizeable partnership.
8 runs and a wicket come off the over.
India 20/1 after 2 overs.
Samson chops the 1st delivery to third man but is beaten on the next ball as he looks to cut but misses. He then rocks onto the back foot and slaps the 3rd delivery over mid-on for FOUR.
Archer responds by banging it in shorter and this time Samson pulls it over square leg for SIX. He then grabs a single to rotate strike. Abhishek gets off the mark with a single. Strong start for India with 12 runs coming off it.
India 12/0 after the first over.
We're done with the national anthems and the Indian opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are making their way out to the middle greeted by a big roar erupts around the Wankhede Stadium.
England will open the attack with pace as Jofra Archer is handed the new ball with Samson on strike.
India's top order haven't fired in unison so far in the tournament. Abhishek Sharma started the tournament with three consecutive ducks and although he bounced back with a half-century against Zimbabwe, he's still waiting on a match-defining knock.
Sanju Samson walked back into the side post that defeat against South Africa and he has looked like the missing piece for the Men in Blue. His unbeaten 97* against West Indies in a virtual 'knockout' signalled a shift in mindset and India will hope he replicates that form tonight.
Ishan Kishan began the tournament in dominant fashion but has seen his form dip in recent games. India will be hoping tonight is the night that it all comes together for their top-order with a berth in the Final up for grabs.
Pitch Report | Nasser Hussain and Ian Bishop: The wonderful Wankhede Stadium, the venue for this second semi-final, and it feels a little bit warmer in the middle than when we're here for the group stages. If you look at the weather forecast, 32 was the high. It's going to go down to 28 degrees, but also there's a lovely breeze down the ground - 15k - and that's hitting in the direction of the Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar stands. We are pitch 7, which is right in the middle, and the ground dimension, 75 metres down the ground and equidistant on both sides, 65 metres and 65 metres. We're right in the middle. Wonderful amphitheatre.
What about the pitch and the surroundings? I think the battle really starts beyond the boundary with the sea of blue that's going to be here supporting India. England are going to have to quieten that. They've applied an anti-dew repellent onto this ground, so hopefully that keeps the dew away and keeps it quite, suppose, equal for both teams. The surface itself, it has spun more historically than any of the other pitches on this square or in this country. And that's about 2.3 degrees of turn. However, I'm not saying that's going to happen tonight because it feels a little bit harder. I've been told that they've cross-rolled it. There's a little bit more grass along here, so I'm crossing my fingers that it'll be a nice surface where the ball comes on.
Suryakumar Yadav (India Captain): We were looking to bat first. Semifinal, big game, and there's wind around too. Don't think there will be much dew. Looks a good one (the pitch). The best one. Credit to all the curators and groundsmen. Same team.
Harry Brook (England Captain): We're going to have a bowl. Looks like a good wicket, hopefully we can get off to a good start with the ball. They've obviously got a lot more experience on this ground than us. T20 cricket is such a fickle game, you never know what's going to happen. Hopefully we can keep them quiet (the crowd). Overton comes in for Rehan.
India name an unchanged Playing XI for a third game in a row while England make one change with Jame Overton coming in for Rehan Ahmed.
India (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah.
England (Playing XI): Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (WK), Harry Brook (C), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid.
Harry Brook wins the Toss and declares that his team will prefer to chase today as they opt to bowl.
India's path to the semis included a perfect group stage run before a sobering Super 8 loss to South Africa, a defeat that galvanised the host nation, drawing a swift response.
The return of Sanju Samson to the Playing XI may just be the greatest takeaway after that defeat. Samson almost single-handedly guided the team into the semifinal with an unbeaten 97 in a virtual knockout versus West Indies at the Eden Gardens.
England meanwhile arrive in strong form. They have lost only once in the tournament so far. Notably, that defeat came at the Wankhede Stadium against West Indies.
The Windies posted 196/6 and England managed just 166 in response. That match underlined England's vulnerability in the middle overs against spin, a phase India will be keen to exploit in the semifinal.
However, the Three Lions have remained unbeaten since that defeat, especially steamrolling their oppositions in the Super 8 stage, beating Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in dominant fashion.
Overwhelming favourites at the start of the tournament, India have not been able to stitch together a perfect game against stronger sides in the competition. Ahead of their knockout clash against England, here is a look at what different experts have predicted to be the outcome of this monumental clash.

We'll be bringing you all the live updates as India take on England in the second semifinal of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
India arrived at the semifinal after a strong unbeaten run through the first group stage, only to suffer a heavy defeat to South Africa in their Super 8 opener. Suryakumar Yadav's team recovered well from that setback with back-to-back wins to secure safe passage into the semifinals.
England, meanwhile, have emerged as one of the most dangerous sides in the competition. The Three Lions suffered just one defeat in the group stage and then bullied their way through the Super 8, winning all three of their ties.
However, their only loss so far of the tournament came at this very venue where they now prepare to take on the hosts and defending champions India.
