Rains Batter Mizoram, IMD Predicts More Rainfall In Many Northeastern States On June 2-3
The weather agency has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for Assam and Meghalaya on June 2 and 3.
Mizoram and other northeastern states have been witnessing heavy rainfall over the past few days, triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall for Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura on June 2.
As per the IMD, Assam and Meghalaya may see isolated heavy to very rainfall on June 2 and 3. The weather agency has reported a low to moderate risk of flash floods in parts of northeastern India over the next 24 hours (till 5:30 a.m. on June 3), such as Saiha and Lawngtlai and Kohima in Nagaland.
Rains Batter Mizoram
On Sunday, June 1, Mizoram received heavy rainfall. Serchhip district recorded 10.46 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, followed by Kolasib registering 9.83 cm and Aizawl 9.74 cm of rainfall.
The state is expected to face thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over the next two days. Storms are also expected in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, coastal Karnataka and sub-Himalayan Sikkim and West Bengal on June 2 and 3.
The IMD has predicted that thunderstorms and lightning could be witnessed in parts of Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and interior Karnataka on June 4 and 5.
The heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and damage to buildings and crops. The weather agency has advised a postponement of rice planting in Arunachal Pradesh and other crops in the northeastern states.
CM Holds Meeting
On Sunday, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma held an emergency meeting with ministers and important officials after a spate of landslides and waterlogging in the state. At least five people had lost their lives till Sunday during the monsoon season.
State disaster management and rehabilitation officials stated that landslides occurred in 211 locations in Mizoram till Sunday, PTI reported. Highways have been blocked at 83 locations, as per government officials.
"So far, 60 houses have collapsed or have been damaged, and 69 others have been vacated due to landslides or mudslides and floods across the state," an official explained, the PTI report mentioned.
During the meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, the government noted that many of the natural calamities that happened in the state were man-made. They promised to take strict measures against site development, slope modification, building plans and construction to prevent calamities.
The government also decided to help the immediate release of funds to enable district disaster management authorities to expedite some work.
