Urban mobility in Mumbai is set to get revolutionised with a unified ticketing system for all public transport options in the city. The Maharashtra government has revealed plans to introduce a platform allowing daily passengers to access any public transport service with just one card or mobile application.
The unified ticketing system, called Mitra, will enable passengers to book tickets for local trains, BEST buses, Metro rail, and even app-based cabs. This initiative aims to make daily travel more convenient for commuters.
The announcement came following a meeting of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, where they discussed a possible implementation of an Integrated Ticketing System (ITS) for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The system will be technologically powered by the Open Network for Digital Commerce in Commuter Convenience (ONDCC) platform, reported Mid-Day.
Fadnavis said that the system has multiple benefits as passengers will be able to use different modes of transport with a single ticket. Additionally, a mobile app will be available to help commuters plan their journeys better.
An integrated ticketing system will significantly reduce wait times, enhancing commuter satisfaction by allowing users to book tickets with a single click.
The app will integrate Indian Railways, Mumbai Metro, app-based taxis, and state-run buses, ensuring a seamless travel experience.
“The ONDCC platform will transform the way Mumbaikars travel by aligning local train timings with Metro and BEST bus schedules, enabling more efficient and convenient journeys,” railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
This ticketing system is also in line with the government’s wider aim of modernising urban transport and leveraging technology to address the increasing demands of Mumbai's growing population. With the unified ticketing platform, the city's public transport is poised to become more integrated, accessible, and prepared for the future.
