A severe hailstorm followed by sharp showers lashed Shimla and surrounding areas on Wednesday afternoon while light to moderate rains occurred at isolated places in of Himachal Pradesh, the weather office told PTI.
The local meteorological centre issued a 'yellow' warning for thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometre per hour at isolated places of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts from May 29 to June 1 along with a wet spell in the region till June 3.
The West Bengal government has started moving people from low-lying areas and deployed disaster management personnel in the coastal districts amid a forecast for heavy rains due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, an official told PTI on Wednesday.
The meteorological department has issued 'yellow' and 'orange' alerts for the national capital for Friday with rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in the city.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of Odisha under the influence of a “well marked” low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and more downpour is forecast in the state till May 30, the IMD said on Wednesday.
It issued an ‘Orange’ alert (be prepared to take action) in five districts – Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Koraput and Rayagada – where lightning and thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely during the period.
Traffic movement is slow at Mahalaxmi Junction and near Rambhavan Hotel (Northbound) on the Western Express Highway due to water logging, as per Mumbai Traffic Police notification on X profile.

The Mumbai civic body has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh each on the operators of four mini pumping stations for failing to install and operate pumps to clear the water accumulated at key junctions in Mumbai following heavy rains, reported PTI.

The India Meteorology Department on Tuesday informed the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal prompting the Odisha government to put the collectors of all the districts on alert.
Four persons, including two minors, drowned in a nullah and a river, while another man was electrocuted to death in separate incidents in Marathwada after heavy rains lashed parts of the central Maharashtra region on Tuesday, a government official told PTI.
