A cyclonic circulation forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Assam, Nagaland, other northeastern states, and parts of West Bengal in the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned on Feb. 18. The weather body has also predicted rainfall for northern states and central India this week, along with snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Rainfall In Northeast States
“A cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam in lower tropospheric levels. Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall activity likely over Arunachal Pradesh during February 18-24 with the possibility of heavy rain on February 18 and 19,” the weather body said.
The cyclonic conditions are expected to bring scattered, light rainfall to Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim over the next 7 days.
Moreover, thunderstorm activity is likely over all the seven northeastern states from Feb. 18-20. Gusty winds are also expected to prevail in these states during this time. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to get up to very heavy rainfall until Feb. 21, the weather agency said.
Yellow Alert In Parts of West Bengal
The IMD's regional centre for West Bengal has predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in parts of South Bengal from Feb. 19-20. According to the prediction, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Bankura, North and South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly districts will get light to moderate rainfall tomorrow.
Moreover, a similar situation is expected to prevail in East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas on Feb. 20.
A yellow alert has been issued for these districts of West Bengal in view of the situation. The IMD has also warned of possible damage to mature Rabi crops and vegetables, advising farmers to harvest them at the earliest.
Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh To Get Rainfall on These Dates
Isolated light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand due to a possible western disturbance on Feb. 19 and 20, with isolated rainfall or snowfall continuing from Feb. 21 to 23.
Light Rainfall Likely In Central India On Feb 21-22
Particularly heavy rainfall situation is likely to prevail in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh on Feb. 20. “Isolated scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is likely over east Rajasthan on Feb. 19; Punjab, Haryana on Feb. 19 and 20; west Uttar Pradesh Feb. 20; and isolated light rainfall over central India on Feb 21 and 22,” the IMD predicted.
