Construction Work For Rs 5,000-Crore Dharavi Redevelopment To Begin In A Month

Construction work on the first phase of the Adani-led Dharavi Redevelopment Project is set to begin in a month, people aware of the development told NDTV Profit.

The construction work will begin with development of a railway land parcel of over 27 acres. Under the project, railway quarters will be constructed on two acres of this land parcel.

The bid to redevelop what has often been touted as one of the world's biggest slums was won by the media-to-mining conglomerate in 2022 at a cost of Rs 5,069 crore. Navbharat Mega Developers—as the entity is now known—was set up to undertake the 259-hectare redevelopment project.

Under the project, the Maharashtra government has decided to provide free housing to eligible residents of Dharavi. Additionally, the state government will offer affordable housing to ineligible residents under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or through a hire-purchase scheme.

The state government has also planned to allocate 10% of the built-up area of rehabilitation component for commercial spaces, creating a revenue-generating model.

In December last year, a survey of over 30,000 structures in Mumbai's Dharavi was completed as part of the project. This leaves 70,000 more structures to be mapped. Earlier, in March 2024, the project began with a data-collection survey of lakhs of informal tenement residents of the area.
