Lawyer Indira Jaising approached the Supreme Court seeking live-streaming of all cases of national and constitutional importance in the top court that have an impact on the public.

“It will empower and provide access to the ordinary citizens who cannot personally come to court due to social-economic constraints though the decision of the court will impact them,” Jaising said in her petition filed today. "Such an exercise would inspire confidence in the functioning of the judiciary as an institution and help in maintaining the respect that it deserves as a co-equal organ of the state.”

Jaising cited instances of various court judgements of public importance which are appreciated and criticised in public. Live-streaming of the proceedings will help in a better understanding of the reasons on which the judgements are delivered, the petition said.

Until the arrangements for live-streaming are made, the court should order the recording of importance cases like the petitions challenging Aadhaar and Section 377 that criminalises homosexuality, and upload them on YouTube for the public, it said.

Jaising mentioned the petition before Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. Its date of listing is yet to be decided.
