Reserve Bank Governor Sanjay Malhotra will announce the bi-monthly monetary policy on Friday amid widespread expectations of a third consecutive rate cut of 25 basis points or even bigger to propel economic growth against the backdrop of trade tensions triggered by Trump tariffs.
The RBI's rate-setting panel Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) started its three-day deliberations on Wednesday.
All 30 economists polled by Bloomberg expect the MPC to continue to cut rates for the third straight meeting. In a report released on Monday, the State Bank of India (SBI) projected that the RBI may declare a repo rate cut of 50 basis points in its upcoming MPC meeting to revive the credit cycle and minimise the impact of economic uncertainties.
The central bank reduced the key benchmark lending rate (repo) by 25 bps points each in February and April this year on the recommendations of the governor-headed MPC.

RBI Monetary Policy Meeting: What To Expect?
As per the SBI report, the RBI MPC could announce a significant rate cut of 50 bps to mitigate the impact of economic uncertainties. Co-authored by Group Chief Economic Adviser at SBI, Dr Soumya Kanti Ghosh, the report said that the banking system is currently experiencing surplus liquidity and a faster repricing of liabilities.
According to the report, financial institutions have reduced the interest rates on savings accounts to 2.7%. Fixed deposit rates have also been cut by 30-70 basis points since February this year. The apex bank needs to strike a balance between containing inflation and preventing a slowdown in growth to revive the credit cycle, the report suggested.
“We expect a 50-basis point rate cut in June’25 policy as a large rate cut could reinvigorate a credit cycle,” the report stated. “Domestic liquidity and financial stability concerns have eased. Inflation is expected to remain within the tolerance band. Preserving domestic growth momentum should be the primary policy objective, justifying a jumbo rate cut,” the report noted. It added that the cumulative rate cut over the ongoing cycle could be 100 bps.
