 When Institutions Went Big On D-Mart IPO

The total value of bids placed by institutions for shares in the initial public offer of D-Mart's parent exceeded their equity investments in all of 2016.

Foreign and domestic institutional investors bid for Rs 54,819 crore worth of Avenue Supermarts Ltd.'s shares, a little higher than Rs 54,435 crore they invested in equities last year.

Qualified institutional buyers bid for 183.3 crore shares, 144 times of what was set aside for them in the Rs 1,870-crore IPO.

The retailer's stock more than doubled on listing to Rs 604.40.
