Tata Starbucks Pvt. plans to expand in India at a time when the Covid-19 outbreak and national lockdowns have battered the functioning of all businesses, including the hospitality sector.
The joint venture between Tata Consumer Products Ltd. and Starbucks Corp.—which runs 190 cafes across India—intends to open six more by August, Navin Gurnaney, the company's chief executive officer, told BloombergQuint. He said the company opened 30 coffee outlets in 2018 and 36 in 2019.
Indian customers have embraced us substantially since we got here, which encourages us to open new stores, he told BloombergQuint in an interview.
So far this year, they have already opened two cafes—in Chandigarh and Lucknow. He expects the company to open more than 36 stores in the ongoing financial year.
“We have always been bullish on the Indian market,” Gurnaney said. “Construction of a new store at the statue of unity in Gujarat is almost complete, but because of several reasons and national lockdown, we could not open it.”
