If you’re planning a quick getaway this Independence Day weekend to unwind, you are not alone — and you might want to book fast.

With the national holiday falling on a Friday and Janmashtami coinciding, Indians are turning the long weekend into a perfect mini-vacation.

The result? A massive surge in travel demand, packed hotels and skyrocketing flight fares both in India and abroad. Road trips are popular during the holiday weekend, and one must prepare for congestion.

Domestic Hotspots In High Demand

From the beaches of Goa to the hills of Dehradun, Udaipur, and Darjeeling, travellers are heading out in droves.

Popular hotel chains report 25–30% more bookings than last year, with many premium properties already sold out. Flights are following the same trend. One can expect 100% surge in airfares to Goa from Delhi and Mumbai; 10-30% hike in fares to scenic spots like Dehradun, Udaipur, and Coimbatore.

"Most premium hotels in Goa and hill stations like Darjeeling, Dehradun and Mussoorie are fully booked for the weekend," said Ved Khanna, president, Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India.

Leisure travel to popular destinations is up 25–30%, with Goa seeing the highest surge in airfares from Delhi and Mumbai, jumping by 100% week-on-week, according to Rajnish Kumar, Group Co-CEO, Ixigo.

"There is a notable shift toward premium experiences, with 27% rise in premium class bookings," said Govind Gaur, chief executive officer and co-founder of WanderOn, a homegrown travel tech company.

On major domestic trunk routes like Delhi–Mumbai, Delhi–Bengaluru, and Mumbai–Goa, air fares rose by 40–60%, and certain hill‑station routes saw 60–80% increases over the previous year, he added.

Travellers are also seeking interest in culturally rich escapes to Rajasthan and Amritsar, and the serene backwaters of Kerala during this holiday weekend, according to Karan Agarwal, director, Cox & Kings. "Also, spiritual hubs like Varanasi are seeing a surge, as travellers blend leisure with cultural and spiritual immersions."

Looking Beyond Borders

Many are stretching the break into a 4–5 day international trip, with Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Don Mueang, Dubai and Bangkok topping the list for quick getaways.

Routes like Mumbai–Bangkok and Delhi–Dubai are experiencing fare spikes up to 80%, said WanderOn's Gaur.

"With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, August 13, giving early travellers a five-day window," said Rajesh Magow, Co-founder & Group CEO, MakeMyTrip.

Travellers Returning Home

India’s migrant working population continues to maximise on such extended weekend public holiday breaks to return home and this is seeing an increase in flight loads to Tier 2 cities, according to Cleartrip's travel trends tracker.

If you’re booking last minute: Flights to tier 2 cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar are in high demand, with one-way prices averaging Rs 6,000–7,000.

Trains and buses on busy routes are already sold out.

What You Can Do

Book now to avoid steep last-minute airfare hikes. Consider alternative routes with good connectivity but lower saturation.

Look for value-driven packages that balance cost with festive fun and stay flexible with travel dates if possible.

“There is a trend of value-driven getaways that balance festive obligations with a growing desire for cost-effective yet fulfilling travel experiences,” says Manjari Singhal, chief growth and business officer, Cleartrip.
