India represents OpenAI's second-largest market, CEO Sam Altman noted on Wednesday, as he advocated that the country get involved in every aspect of the AI stack, from development to deployment.

The OpenAI chief is in Delhi to attend an event with founders and policymakers to discuss India's evolving AI landscape. He is on a multi-country tour across the Asia-Pacific region, and is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Wednesday.

"India should be doing everything within the AI stack. Amazing to see what India has done so far," he said.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is focusing on democratising technology and working on the full AI stack via IndiaAI Mission. "OpenAI makes life significantly easier," he said at the event.

Addressing some earlier comments, Altman clarified that his statement regarding building foundational models was taken out of context. He noted that OpenAI has not made significant strides in model distillation yet, which is a technique aimed at making AI models more efficient. He also acknowledged that training AI models remains a costly endeavor.
