India's stock benchmarks pared most of the intraday gains but advanced for the second session in a row, aided by a surge in metal, realty, capital goods, information technology, commodities, energy, industrials and power stocks.
It came amid an uptick in global equities and after the OPEC+ bloc's decision to cut oil supply.
The Sensex rose 0.27% (157 points) to close at 58,222.10. The 30-stock gauge rose over 510 points to an intraday high of 58,578.76 before paring the gains.
The Nifty 50 also advanced 0.33% to close at 17,331.80.
Today, 28 of the Nifty 50 stocks rose while 22 fell.
JSW Steel Ltd., Hindalco Ltd., Coal India Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd. and L&T Ltd. were the top gainers, while Bharti Airtel Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd., IndusInd Bank Ltd., HDFC Ltd., and Divi's Laboratories Ltd. declined the most among the index constituents.
The broader indices outperformed their larger peers with both the Midcap and Smallcap measures rising over 1%.
Barring FMCG and Telecommunication indexes, all the other 17 sectoral indices compiled by BSE Ltd. advanced.
The market breadth was skewed in favour of bulls. About 2,365 stocks rose, 1,089 fell and 129 remained unchanged.
