Singer Lata Mangeshkar died of Covid-related complications on Sunday. She was 92.
“Legendary singer and Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar passes away today after prolonged hospitalization in Mumbai,” national broadcaster Doordarshan tweeted.
Mangeshkar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in January. She was "diagnosed with Covid pneumonia and was admitted in the ICU", Dr Pratit Samdani, who was treating the singer, had told The Quint.
Two days of state mourning will be observed on Sunday and Monday during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the country and there will be no official entertainment in a mark of respect for Mangeshkar, according to a government statement. She will be accorded a state funeral.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other cabinet ministers expressed grief and condolences.

Nitin Gadkari, union minister for road transport and highways, rushed to the hospital after the news broke.

Mangeshkar, often called 'India's melody queen,' comes from a family of singers and had a career that spanned eight decades. Her father Dinanath Mageshkar was classical singer, and so are her siblings Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. She was conferred the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, in 2001.
Venkaiah Naidu, vice president of India reminisced her song, also condoled her death.
