IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional Rs 300 crore to the institute's Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology.
The latest commitment follows Gangwal's Rs 100-crore contribution in 2022 to support IIT Kanpur's plans to establish a medical school on its campus.

Under the new commitment, Gangwal will provide matching grants against contributions made by other supporters, up to a total of Rs 300 crore, IIT Kanpur said in a press statement.
The matching-grant model is aimed at encouraging alumni and other donors to contribute towards the development of the medical school.
Focus On Medicine, Engineering And Technology
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being developed around the integration of medicine, engineering and technology.
Prof Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said Gangwal's first contribution had helped the institute set its medical school plans in motion.
“Recognising the potential of interdisciplinary research and innovation in engineering technology and medicine to transform healthcare delivery across India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur ventured into establishing a medical school,” Agrawal said.
IIT Kanpur said the additional commitment is intended to help mobilise further support for the project by matching contributions from other donors.
Gangwal, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, had made his first Rs 100-crore contribution in 2022 to help the institute establish the medical school.
The latest commitment of up to Rs 300 crore takes his support for the initiative further, while also seeking to attract additional funding from the institute's wider community of alumni and supporters.
“Mr Gangwal contributed ₹100 crore in 2022, which greatly helped the Institute set the plans in motion. This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner," Agrawal said.

The development comes as IIT Kanpur continues work on building a medical school that combines medical education with the institute's strengths in engineering and technology.
