The India Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm warning for 15 districts of Odisha on April 2. According to Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty, in a daily weather briefing, thunderstorms with light rain, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kilometres per hour are expected in parts of these 15 out of Odisha's 30 districts.
The districts are Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Angul, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Koraput, the director reported.
"We have issued a yellow warning (be aware) for these districts," Mohanty said.
On April 3, the weather scientist predicted thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds of 50-60 kilometres per hour, and hailstorms in parts of Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur districts. For April 4, similar weather conditions are expected in the Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Angul, Rayagada, and Koraput districts.
An orange warning, indicating preparedness for action, was issued for these districts for the two days, according to the weather scientist. The India Meteorological Department stated that strong winds may cause damage to plantations, horticulture, standing crops, vulnerable structures, temporary houses, walls, and huts.
The India Meteorological Department advised people to monitor weather conditions for potential deterioration and prepare to relocate to safer locations if necessary.
Stay indoors, close windows and doors and avoid travel, if possible, the IMD advised.
Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speeds of 40-60 km/h are expected in several other districts on April 3 and 4. Light to moderate rainfall is likely in many other areas of the state till April 7.
