After last year's #IWearHandloom campaign became a top trend on Twitter, Smriti Irani, Union minister of textiles, launched a new social media campaign. This time the hashtag crafted is #CottonIsCool, and it's aimed at promoting the use of homegrown cotton among the younger generation.

“Today, India is one of the largest cotton producing nations & cotton has become the ultimate summer fabric,” tweeted Irani before kick-starting the campaign online. The Ministry of Textiles had been using the hashtag #CottonKatha to promote cotton ahead of the campaign.

“India's rendezvous with cotton predates the Indus Valley civilization and has since evolved. Cotton provides comfort in the scorching heat. Wear cotton to stay cool & celebrate cotton industry that employs millions across the country,” Irani tweeted.

Irani posted a picture of herself in a cotton saree and asked fellow ministers and leaders to join in. Chief ministers to cabinet ministers started posting pictures of themselves in cotton with the hastag #CottonIsCool. Fashion designers, sportspersons and Bollywood personalities followed, and #CottonIsCool soon started trending on Twitter.
