A Brahmin, an OBC, a Thakur: Congress’ Game Plan for 2017 UP Polls
A Brahmin face, an OBC representative and a Thakur presence – with this, the Congress seems to be ready to take on the 2017 elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Amid whispers of Priyanka Gandhi becoming the Congress' face in UP, the party on Thursday finally put the rumour mills to rest.
In a big announcement, the Congress brought three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit back from her apparent retirement, and declared her the Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2017 UP elections. The fact that she's a Brahmin, seems key in this election.
The party now seems to have laid all its cards on the table.
Sanjay Singh, the ‘Raja of Amethi' was already announced the head of the Congress campaign committee. On Tuesday, actor-turned-politican, Raj Babbar was declared the party chief for UP.
With this motley group of people, the Congress is hoping to win back it's original votebank of upper castes and other non-Dalit OBCs.
How the politics of the state will play out, remains to be seen.
