(Bloomberg) -- Aaron Boone, the manager of the New York Yankees, is out of surgery after having a pacemaker installed.
Boone, 47, is recovering at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, the team said in a statement. Wednesday's procedure went as expected.
The team announced earlier Wednesday that Boone would take an immediate medical leave to have the device put in.
Boone played for the Cincinnati Reds, the Yankees and other major-league teams before his coaching career, and was named an All-Star in 2003. He made his managerial debut for the Yankees in 2018.
“I underwent open-heart surgery in 2009, and I wanted everyone to understand where I'm at regarding the procedure that's taking place today,” Boone said in a statement before the procedure. “Over the last six to eight weeks I've had mild symptoms of lightheadedness, low energy and shortness of breath.”
Boone had a series of tests in New York prior to spring training and found he had a low heart rate, “which, after further consultations with doctors in Tampa, necessitates a pacemaker,” he said.
“I have complete trust that our coaches, staff and players will continue their training and preparation at the same level as we've had and without any interruption,” he said.
