Trucks, SUVs Drive Canadian Auto Sales to Fifth-Straight Record

(Bloomberg) -- Canadian automobile sales reached another record high in 2017 led by trucks and SUVs, while passenger cars moved off dealer lots at the slowest pace since 1964.

Light vehicle sales rose 4.6 percent last year to 2.04 million units, the fifth-straight record, according to a report Wednesday by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. Light truck sales climbed 8.7 percent to 1.4 million and passenger cars fell 3.4 percent to 639,823 units.

The year ended on a weaker note, with the latest figure for December being a 1.1 percent decline in sales on the heels of 1.2 percent drop in November.

Ford Motor Co. was the top brand in Canada with sales of 308,474, followed by General Motors Co. at 302,826 units.
