Starbucks coffee servers in the US, or baristas as they are called, can now flaunt their tattoos and wear nose studs at work, thanks to the American global coffee chain updating its dress code policy.
However, it comes with a caveat that employees cannot display tattoos on their face or throat. "We want customers to focus on you, not your body art. Tattoos are allowed, but not on your face or throat. Treat tattoos as you treat speech - you can't swear, make hateful comments or lewd jokes in the workplace, neither can your tattoos," Starbucks said in a message to its employees.
While nose studs are now allowed, septum piercings and nose rings are still taboo at work.
The new dress code will also allow servers to wear untucked shirts, black jeans, khaki pants, skirts and shorts (both no more than 4 inches above the knees). Baristas can even choose to wear scarves, ties or bowties, with no restriction on colours.
Wearing a ring to work is permitted, as per the new policy but it cannot have stones. Watches, bracelets or wristbands are not allowed anymore, under 'food safety rules'.
"As partners, your appearance is a reflection of the Starbucks brand and how you show up collectively is important to our customers. At the same time, we want to build a company where self-expression, empowerment and inclusion are nurtured. With this balance in mind, and with your thoughtful feedback, we have updated our dress code," Starbucks told its employees.
