Consumer confidence improved marginally while inflation expectations moderated, showed the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) forward looking surveys released on Wednesday.

According to the consumer confidence survey, the current situation index recovered after hitting the “pessimistic zone” in the previous round of the survey. Sentiment improved due to a better outlook on the economic situation, price situation and households' income among the survey respondents.

The future expectations index also rose 1.7 percentage points over its March 2017 level, on improved outlook on all parameters, said the RBI.

Households' current perceptions on the economic situation improved slightly in May 2017, though net responses remained in the negative zone for the second consecutive round. Respondents' outlook on the future economic situation was, however, more optimistic.

A separate survey on inflation expectations conducted by the central bank threw up mixed results.

The survey found that the proportion of respondents expecting prices to increase in the next three months declined across all product groups, barring housing. In contrast, expectations of an increase in inflation over the next year increased.

However, the median expectation for the inflation rate over three months and one year declined.

Among the respondents who expect the general level of prices to increase in the next three months (around 70 percent), the proportion expecting it to rise by more than the current rate declined marginally. Similar sentiment prevailed across all the product groups, except housing. For one year ahead, this proportion rose for the general price level and also for various product groups, except housing and services.
