Controversial Meat Exporter Moin Qureshi Arrested In Money Laundering Case
The Enforcement Directorate has arrested controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi as part of its money laundering investigation against him and others. Qureshi was taken into custody on Friday night after a round of questioning in Delhi, agency officials told PTI.
The action against the meat exporter has been taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. He will be produced in a court on Saturday, the officials said, accusing the businessman of not cooperating in the probe.
The agency has questioned Qureshi multiple times in the past and has named him in two first information reports registered under the Act. AP Singh, former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, also features in its latest first information report.
Qureshi was earlier booked under the anti-money laundering law in 2015 following an income tax prosecution complaint. He is also facing proceedings by the tax department and the CBI for alleged tax evasion, money laundering and corruption among other charges.
Tax sleuths are probing Qureshi under the new Black Money (Undisclosed Foreign Income and Assets) and Imposition of Tax Act, 2015 after an investigation led them to few foreign assets owned or held by the meat exporter and his family in an alleged illegal manner. The department says Qureshi had not declared those assets.
The case emerged after the tax department first carried out searches against Qureshi and his firm AMQ Group in February 2014.
