Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. on Thursday welcomed its 100th commercial vessel, MSC Michela, within just six months of operations, marking a significant milestone in India's efforts to become a global transshipment hub.
Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., shared this news on his X profile on Thursday.
"The arrival of MSC Michela, the 100th commercial vessel to dock at Vizhinjam Port in under six months, is another milestone in India's rapid emergence as a global transshipment hub," wrote Karan Adani on his X profile.
"With automated container handling, this new port in Kerala is a forerunner of our drive towards leveraging state-of-the-art technology in ports and logistics," the Adani Ports MD further shared.

The port was developed by Adani Ports in collaboration with the state government of Kerala.
The Vizhinjam Port is India's first mega transshipment container terminal and is positioned strategically just 10 nautical miles from major international shipping routes. It boasts a natural draft of 20-24 meters, making it one of India's deepest ports. This depth eliminates the need for extensive dredging, allowing it to accommodate large container ships effortlessly.
The port features advanced technologies, including eight ship-to-shore cranes and 23 cantilevered rail-mounted gantry cranes.
Notably, Adani Ports cumulatively handled 36 million metric tonnes of total cargo in November, driven by a 21% year-on-year growth in container volumes. For the year-to-date period ending November, the ports operator managed 293.7 MMT of cargo, marking a 7% YoY increase.
This growth was primarily supported by a 19% YoY rise in container traffic, followed by a 7% increase in liquids and gas cargo, according to an exchange filing.
