Amid the relentless bombing of targets in Iran, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that there were no indications of any nuclear installation being hit or damaged during the conflict, thus far.

This includes the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, the Tehran Research Reactor, and others, the UN Nuclear watchdog IAEA chief, Rafael Mariano, has said, “up to now”.

Mariano was addressing a special session of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna today, where he maintained that the IAEA has been making repeated attempts to contact Iranian nuclear authorities without success.

“There has been no response so far, given the limitations in communications caused by the conflict,” he told the special session, “The efforts to reach the authorities in Iran will continue.”

However, Mariano said, so far there has been no increase in radiation levels around Iran.  “No elevation of radiation levels, above the usual background, has been detected in countries bordering Iran,” Mariano maintained, urging military restraint, with a “warning”.

He said that Iran and many other countries in the region, which have been targeted, have “operational nuclear plants and nuclear research reactors, as well as associated fuel shortage sites.”

Mariano said that there was an increase in the threat to nuclear safety in the region. “I reiterate my call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation,” he added.
