Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, travelled to Tehran on Monday after speaking with President Donald Trump last week, with Islamabad seeking to persuade Iran to return to negotiations with Washington, according to Reuters.
The previously unreported conversation took place last week and was initiated by Trump, the report added.

President Trump initiated the previously undisclosed conversation last week.
The Reuters report added that the central US request was for Pakistan to encourage Iran to return to the negotiating table amid escalating tensions and Washington's efforts to isolate Tehran economically.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while details of the discussion between Trump and Munir remained unclear.
Munir arrived in Tehran accompanied by Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
Pakistan's military said the visit was part of Islamabad's efforts to promote regional peace and stability. Pakistan has maintained close trading ties with Iran and has played a mediating role between Washington and Tehran this year.
Earlier mediation efforts resulted in an interim peace agreement in June, but the arrangement soon faltered as renewed fighting between the United States and Iran raised fears of a wider regional conflict.
Munir was expected to meet people close to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, according to the report.

Beyond US-Iran tensions, the visit was also expected to cover recent attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi fighters on Saudi Arabia and Pakistan's newly signed mutual defence agreement with Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
Reuters cited a Pakistani source saying the talks would seek to address the “trust deficit” between Washington and Tehran, with Munir aiming to help bridge the gap and create conditions for renewed dialogue.
