In a move that signals a new phase in its evolution from AI research lab to full-scale technology provider, Anthropic has poached one of Microsoft's most senior cloud engineering leaders. Eric Boyd has joined Anthropic as head of infrastructure, a hire that underscores just how much the AI arms race has shifted from model capability to operational muscle.
Boyd is no stranger to AI at scale. He spent over 16 years at Microsoft, where he led the AI Platform team, delivering Microsoft Foundry and Foundry IQ, while powering the company's first-party Copilot applications for over 11 years, as reported by Bloomberg.

He reported directly to Executive Vice President Jay Parikh and oversaw a team of approximately 1,500 workers, as per reports. Crucially, Boyd led the engineering of hardware and software needed to host both OpenAI and Anthropic models on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform, giving him an unusually intimate understanding of Anthropic's own infrastructure needs, even before joining the company.
Before Microsoft, Boyd held leadership roles at Yahoo for nearly 10 years, building a career defined by large-scale platform engineering long before generative AI became the defining tech narrative of the decade.
On LinkedIn, Boyd framed his departure from Redmond as a natural next step. "I'm excited to join the amazing team at Anthropic today where I'll be leading the Infrastructure team," he wrote. "I've been privileged to have a front row seat to the explosion of LLMs, and the team at Anthropic is truly special."
The timing of the hire is telling. Anthropic has struggled at times to keep its services online after what it described as "unprecedented demand" from everyday users and business customers, and is working to build additional cloud computing capacity, including committing to spend $50 billion to build AI data centres in the US.

Anthropic's CTO Rahul Patil welcomed the appointment, writing on LinkedIn: "His experience leading infrastructure at enterprise scale will help ensure we can meet record demand from customers around the world."
The hire comes during an extraordinary week for Anthropic, when the company also announced that its annualized revenue run rate has surpassed $30 billion, up from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025. For Boyd, the challenge ahead is as immense as the opportunity: keeping the world's most ambitious AI lab running at the speed it's growing.
