Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 is expected to arrive with significant hardware improvements, offering faster performance and enhanced graphics. Despite the upgrades, the console is likely to launch at a price point similar to that of the PlayStation 5. A leaked report claimed that Sony is targeting a PS6 launch date between late 2027 and early 2028.

The details of the leaks were shared by the YouTube channel Moore’s Law Is Dead based on US’ Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 2023 presentation to Sony. This also means that some things may have changed since 2023, the YouTuber said.

The report said that the PS6 (codenamed Orion) may include eight Zen 6 CPU cores, 40 to 48+ RDNA 5 compute units at over 3GHz and GDDR7 memory on a 160/192-bit bus. With a total board power of 160W, the design is focussed on the energy efficiency model.

The PS6 is rumoured to feature a chiplet-based architecture using AMD’s Navi 5 chips. It may also support backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5 games, helping users retain access to their existing game libraries. Some reports also indicated that PS6 will come with artificial intelligence-driven technologies. If true, this is expected to significantly enhance the overall gaming experience for the users.

According to the leaked report, the PS6 is expected to offer up to three times the PS5’s rasterisation performance while maintaining affordability. In gaming, faster rasterisation means smoother, more detailed graphics. Another report by the WindowsReport website noted that while the PS5 handles 4K gaming well, the PS6 is reportedly optimised for 4K at 120 frames per second (FPS).

Despite significant expected hardware upgrades, Sony reportedly aims to launch the PS6 at an affordable price range. The gaming console is expected to launch at a similar price to the PS5, around $499 (over Rs 40,000) in the United States.
