(Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. said Julie Larson-Green, who oversaw Office software experiences and was once the the company's most senior female executive in an engineering role, has left to pursue new opportunities.
Larson-Green, who spent almost 25 years at the software maker, has been on leave since May. Previously, she was in charge of Windows software and hardware and spearheaded radical shifts in the look and feel of the company's flagship products. She led the redesign of Windows 8 -- that aroused some users' ire -- and added the ribbon design to the top of the Office screen. After a brief stint heading up hardware, she returned to the Office group in recent years.
Larson-Green took a leave to recover from spinal cord surgery, and while out, spent some time advising other companies on product development and culture, with Microsoft's permission, she said. "It made me realize I was ready to take what I learned at Microsoft and apply it in other places," she said. She received an award for her mentoring work last week.
Jeff Teper and Aleš Holeček have been handling Larson-Green's duties since she went on leave.
