Indian troops returned fire after Pakistani forces targeted forward positions along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir late Thursday, NDTV reported quoting military sources.

Security personnel responded “effectively” to the firing, which was described as unprovoked, with no casualties reported on the Indian side, the report quoted sources as saying.

The incident followed a recent attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, including a Nepali national, and heightened tension between the two countries. Investigators have linked the attack to operatives with suspected cross-border connections.

In response, India has taken a series of steps, including the expulsion of Pakistani military officials, suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty signed in 1960, and closure of the Attari land border crossing. The Ministry of External Affairs said the suspension of the water-sharing agreement was notified to Pakistan on Thursday and takes immediate effect.
