Virat Kohli expressed sorrow after a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed at least 11 lives on Wednesday.
A large number of fans had gathered for the felicitation of IPL 2025 winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru team.
"At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted," he said in a post on Instagram while sharing a statement from his team.
"We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us," RCB said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the 11 people who lost their lives in the tragic stampede.
He further announced free treatment for the injured at both private and government hospitals. He confirmed that those who have been brought to the hospital are all out of danger. At least 33 people have been reportedly injured.
"The number of people who turned up was 2–3 lakh, when the capacity of the Chinnaswamy Stadium is around 35,000," Siddaramaiah said while addressing a press conference.
"The match happened last night and the preparation had to be done early this morning," he said.
