The NSE's Nifty 50 Index has lost around Rs 3.6 lakh crore in market value so far this year, as investor sentiment was soured by a global sell-off and a Rs 13,000 crore bank fraud back home.

The benchmark declined 10 percent from its January peak and 4 percent overall in the last quarter of the financial year 2018. The index's market cap currently stands at around Rs 72.25 lakh crore.

The India VIX, a measure of volatility, gained nearly 25 percent in the first three months of the year.

Shares of state-owned lenders were declined the most as the Nifty PSU Bank index lost over 22 percent in a four-month-long rout. Bucking the trend was the Nifty IT Index, which is up over 7 percent so far this year.
