Amid an ongoing wave of primary market offerings and heightened volatility on D-Street, Navneet Munot, Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Asset Management Company (AMC), has urged retail investors to exercise discipline, conduct thorough due diligence, and avoid treating initial public offerings (IPOs) as a shortcut to rapid wealth creation. Munot highlighted that amid the current geopolitical headwinds, it is important to build anti-fragility and resilience into the portfolio for retail investors.
Speaking at NDTV Profit Townhall on Monday, Sept. 7, Munot cautioned market participants against viewing the primary market as a guaranteed windfall. He emphasized that subscribing to IPOs is not the only path to generating returns in the capital markets, warning investors against misinterpreting the acronym as an "instant profit opportunity." Munot pointed out that market cycles are compressing significantly, with equities reacting sharply to every incoming news development and breaking headline.

In such an environment, the fund veteran advised market participants to adopt a balanced perspective, utilizing both a "microscope and a telescopic view" — scrutinizing underlying business fundamentals while remaining anchored to a long-term investment horizon. Turning to valuations, Munot noted a marked divergence across the broader market. While certain sectoral pockets have stretched into excessively high valuation territory, the headline benchmark presents a different picture.
For the first time in recent years, Nifty's price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple has slipped slightly below its 10-year historical average, indicating that large-cap valuations remain relatively reasonable despite localized froth in specific corners of the market. Munot's counsel comes at a time when retail participation in both primary and secondary markets remains at record levels, underscoring the need for fundamental research and measured asset allocation over momentum-driven chasing of listings.
