HDFC Bank Ltd.'s September-quarter results were broadly in line with expectations, but brokerages remained cautious about its growth trajectory and the pace of execution. Citi cut its target price to Rs 880 from Rs 970, while JPMorgan lowered its target to Rs 970 from Rs 990. Both retained positive ratings, alongside Jefferies, Kotak Securities and Bernstein, as analysts weighed margin pressure and slower relative growth against healthy net interest income and resilient asset quality.
Net interest income rose 9.7% year on year, while net interest margin declined 10 basis points sequentially to 3.16%, largely due to the cost of mobilising FCNR-B deposits. Deposit growth was supported by FCNR-B inflows and term deposits, but CASA growth remained muted. Citi flagged constraints on the bank's relative growth trajectory, while Kotak Securities said execution remained the missing piece despite attractive valuations.
Brokerages also highlighted the possibility of a margin recovery. Management said margins were nearing a bottom and could improve as the rate cycle turns, with a 25-basis-point rate hike potentially supporting margins in Q3. However, the cost drag from FCNR-B deposits is expected to continue in the December quarter. Improving asset quality and broad-based loan growth provided support, although provisions increased sequentially.
