In Hyderabad, Biryani’s Not On The Table This Month. Here’s Why...
It's a common perception that Hyderabad is known for its biryani. But it turns out that during the month of Ramadan, that's not the top selling item on the menu. Instead, it's an Arabic dish called Haleem. It's prepared with meat, wheat, spices and a whole lot of ghee and is considered to be the ideal dish to break one's fast with.
Ashis Nayak, a food blogger from Hyderabad, says, “It's all about the 5 G's. First is the ghosth, second is the ghee, third is the gehu or wheat, fourth is the garam masala and fifth is the gotha or the mixer.”
Biryani takes a backseat during the month of Ramadan and hundreds of stalls pop up selling bowls of Haleem across the city, he adds.
But tourists, techies, and locals head to the old city near the Charminar to soak in the sights and sounds of Ramadan and savour their favourite dishes as well.
